I agree with your hopes that more informed choices and knowledge of consequences should lead to better behaviors, but it doesn&#039;t! This problem doesn&#039;t just relate to health behaviors, it even permeates professional and occupational habbits. I&#039;ve heard the average time it takes to fully implement new guidelines among doctors is 17 years, almost an entire career (suggesting that&#160;old habbits die when people retire). I wonder if you&#039;d be interested in discussing how to change behavior in your book. In terms of smoking, there is good evidence that policy changes, such as prohibiting smoking in workplaces, raising taxes, etc, does work in decreasing smoking and even lowering rates of disease. Perhaps we are on average too weak to choose to change our behaviors, and simply need the healthier choices made for us?? just some ideas for thought.
